Travel Demand Management (TDM) is the use of strategies and policies that help give the traveler more choices providing information, incentives, resources, services, and support to change when and how they travel. TDM strategies help to reduce congestion during peak travel periods by making it easier to use other transportation options, such as transit, carpooling, vanpooling, ridesharing, walking, cycling, as well as by encouraging people to travel during off-peak times or not at all (i.e. telecommuting).
Monmouth Within Reach is a federally funded study to develop strategies and best practices to reduce congestion related to tourism and events by using the resources we have in order to better manage the demands on our transportation network.
This study was proposed and selected for federal funding in 2018, before the COVID-19 pandemic. The Monmouth Within Reach Team recognizes that the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted our lives in many ways, including attendance at and business related to tourism and events. However, the study could not be postponed. The team is using historical transportation data from 2018 and 2019 to review congestion levels related to tourism and events and looks forward to an appropriate time for the study’s recommendations to be implemented when tourism and event attendance returns to normal.
The goal of Monmouth Within Reach is to enhance the travel experience for tourists and Monmouth County residents by reducing event and tourism-related congestion through a set of actionable travel demand management strategies.
The study is funded by Monmouth County and a grant from the North Jersey Transportation Planning Authority (NJTPA).
Public involvement is an important element of this study’s success. Your input is valued, welcomed, and encouraged. There are many ways to participate in this study. Please take our community input survey – which only takes a few minutes to complete – and you’ll be able to tell us how you travel throughout Monmouth County and what areas of concern you see, as well as additional comments. Data collected from these surveys will be used to develop potential improvements in the future.
